CHAPTER 12

“I’m a little pissed at you,” Keegan says, as he and Tempest pack their final supplies into packs.

“Why, little man?”

“If there were any time I needed a hazmat suit, this is it.”

“You really think that suit would protect you?” Tempest laughs.

“Probably not, but it would make me feel better.”

“That’s dumb,” Brenna adds. “A hazmat suit won’t do a bit of good against this kind of fire. Astrid and Adria aren’t producing your run-of-the-mill campfire. They’re producing fire of the gods. It burns hotter than any fire in our world. You would be dead before you even knew you were on fire.”

Keegan stares at her. “You’re just a little ray of sunshine, aren’t you?” Their banter lightens the mood, and I’m grateful.

“Maybe you could wear one of those fuzzy headbands I’ve seen you wear. That would protect you about as well as the suit,” Tempest says, shoving weapons into his pack.

“That’s a sweatband, my giant friend. It may seem useless to someone of your qualifications, but in a tennis match it can make the difference between a game point, or out.”

Tempest wrinkles his forehead at Keegan. “I only understood about three words in that sentence.”

“That reminds me.” Keegan stops packing. “Did anyone else hear those noises last night?” Murphy and I both freeze. “It sounded like some kind of wild animal was running loose through the castle.”

“A wild animal, you say?” Brenna wears a huge smile.

“Yes!” Keegan answers. “It sounded like it was growling at one point.”

Tempest snorts out a laugh. “I heard something too, but it didn’t sound like an animal. What about you Murphy? Did you hear anything strange last night?”

“Aye, I heard a lot of strange noises throughout the night.” Murphy’s words make Tempest snort even louder.

“I’m glad to hear I wasn’t the only one.” Keegan continues packing. “Might be a good idea to get an exterminator out here, Adria.”

“Oh, my gods, Keegan. To be so smart, you can be naive at times.” Brenna holds back a laugh.

“What?” he asks, completely confused.

“I’ll tell you when you’re older,” Brenna adds.

Keegan makes eye contact with each of us. “Why are you all acting weird?”

“Who’s being weird?” Shu asks, walking into the room.

Keegan nods his head in our direction. “Everyone. I mentioned the noises I heard last night, and everyone got weird.”

Shu stops moving. “What kind of noises?”

Murphy clears his throat loudly. “Have you heard any news from Grimsgil?”

Shu pours a glass of brandy. “As a matter of fact, yes.” He toasts my direction. “Seems you were right. My spies tell me Astrid is planning on attacking here tomorrow.” He takes a large gulp. “I owe you an apology, my dear.”

“Mine have reported the same.” Llyr walks into the room. “The sooner we leave, the better. Murphy, are the troops ready?”

“Aye,” he answers. “Everyone has been prepped for what’s to come.”

“Do we know what’s to come?” Brenna asks out loud what everyone is thinking. “Hell, I don’t have a clue what’s to come.”

“I don’t think any of us do.” I look around the room at my family.
